A structure that indicates an exclamation about the degree to which an action or state takes/took place.

Equivalent: How ~ (!)

兄は病気が治ってどんなに嬉しかったことか。: How glad my elder brother was when he recovered from his illness!
父は母をどんなに愛していたことか。: How dearly my father loved my mother!
日本へ行くまで日本がどんなに狭いか分からなかった。: I didn't realise how small Japan was until I got to Japan.
英夫は由美子に結婚を断られた時にどんなに残念に思ったことか。: How disappointed Hideo must have felt when Yumiko refused to marry him.
